Saving to Buy A Brighter Future
When Maribel Avitia and her six-year-old
daughter Miranda moved into Wakeland’s Coronado
Terrace, she saved $300 a month in rent.
“It’s made it easier
for me to buy the basic necessities like clothes, food
and school supplies,” she says.
And it’s allowed her to save
money to pay for higher education. Currently a teacher’s
aide at the Boys and Girls Club, Maribel will soon earn
a pre-school teacher’s certificate at Southwestern
College. And then she wants to tackle a bachelor’s
degree in child development.
Maribel’s professional ambitions
are nurtured at Coronado Terrace where she has taken
computer classes at the on-site community center. Little
Miranda also takes advantage of the computer learning
and other after-school programs provided to residents.
Aside from the helpful programs,
the mother-daughter duo likes the Coronado
Terrace community.
“We have good neighbors, a
playground for kids and the Wakeland people are very
nice and responsive to our needs,” said Maribel.
