Neighborly, Clean Environs Lure
Senior Couple
It didn’t take long for Bob
and Vivian Carlsen to make a decision once they got
word their Mission Bay mobilehome park was closing.
“We knew that buying a single-family
home would eat up our savings and condo living is just
too tight, so we went in search of another mobilehome,”
said Bob.
They looked no further than Poinsettia
Mobilehome Park in Poway, one of two such parks
owned and operated by Wakeland Housing.
“The park was so clean and
orderly and the neighbors were immediately friendly,”
Bob recalled. “And, we felt very safe.”
The Carlsens, married just two and
a half years ago, pay a little over $800 a month in
rent and utilities for their two-bedroom home, about
$400 less than they’d have to pay for a market-rate
apartment.
While the cost savings are a major
bonus when you’re on a fixed income, the Carlsens
quickly became enamored with some of the park’s
resident services, including the monthly potluck dinner
that draws dozens of neighbors. And they’ve been
toying with taking a free computer class offered on
site.
Vivian summed things up: “It’s
a very pleasant atmosphere and close to everything we
might need – bus transportation, shopping and
entertainment.” |
