David Alvarez

David Alvarez is the CEO and Chief Strategist of Causa Consulting. David started Causa after 15 years of successful government service, including eight years as an elected official as San Diego City Councilmember. David is the son of undocumented immigrants and grew up poor and an English language learner in Barrio Logan where the odds of being lost to drugs or the violence of gang life were better than finishing high school. David was the first in his family to attend college, be elected to public office and to start a successful small business.
David proudly advocates on behalf of the underserved in San Diego. David took his experience as a long-time community organizer and his knowledge of government to start Causa Consulting as a public affairs firm supporting clients that share his values of making equity and justice a priority for all communities. David led the efforts to annually increase investment in the city’s arts and culture programming, youth programming and neighborhood services during his time on the City Council. Among David’s proudest achievements are the building of major public projects like parks, libraries and housing. David has been an advocate in Sacramento, Washington DC and in Mexico to move forward binational issues.
David and his wife Xochitl, a successful educator, are raising their daughter and son in the community they grew up in hoping they learn the value of hard work, community and strong moral character. David dedicates many hours volunteering as the Founder of Latino Equity Council, a 100% volunteer organization focused on advocacy on behalf of the Latino community. He also serves as: PTA President, Vice President of the Kim Center for Social Balance, Lifetime Member of the National Association of Latino Elected Officials, and Boardmember of Fundacion SIMNSA (Mexico), Circulate San Diego and Camarada.
David graduated with a B.A in Psychology from San Diego State University in 2002 and was an Executive Fellow in the California Capitol Fellowship in 2003.
