HELP WAKELAND RESIDENTS IMPACTED BY COVID-19
When the order to shelter in place came down, Wakeland resident Sheila* took it seriously. As a formerly homeless senior with chronic health issues that affect her immunity, she is particularly vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus. But after several days without leaving her studio apartment, she became concerned she would run out of food. When Wakeland dropped a bag with fresh fruits and vegetables, canned soup and other essential groceries on her doorstep, she was greatly relieved - and thankful.
Sheila says, "Words cannot express how grateful I am for this caring and thoughtful gesture. I am 68 years old, with a fragile immunity, and due to the concerns of contracting COVID-19, I have not left my apartment in four days, let alone gone to a grocery store! Therefore: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!"
Since the pandemic started, Wakeland has been working tirelessly to ensure that our low-income residents' needs are met - especially seniors with health issues like Sheila. We've ramped up our onsite Resident Services to residents so we can take care of their needs as they face new economic challenges caused by COVID-19.
Our work over the past few years has helped stabilize residents' finances with income supports, provided school-age kids with tutoring to prevent learning loss and staved off food insecurity with regular deliveries of groceries. You can help them too.
